The call was answered by Officer Gaetano Acerra, who, upon arriving, listened carefully as the boy opened up about his struggles. The boy explained that he was not fleeing violence or abuse, but rather the exhaustion of sharing a room with others, lacking personal space, and sleeping on an inflatable mattress that was often half-deflated.
Moved by this realization, Officer Acerra made a heartfelt decision. A few days later, he returned—not with questions or warnings, but with a truck full of thoughtful gifts: a real bed, a nightstand, a desk and chair, a television, and even a Wii gaming system—because he believed every child deserves a little joy and fun in their life.

The boy was overwhelmed with gratitude. His eyes lit up and his smile grew wide. In that once bare and cold room, there was suddenly laughter, hope, and a sense of belonging.
“I didn’t do it for attention,” Acerra said quietly. “I did it because I could—and because it was simply the right thing to do.”
Since that day, Officer Acerra has maintained contact with the boy, not just as a police officer but as a mentor and a friend. His presence has become a reassuring reminder that not everyone will walk away when someone asks for help.
