Children see the world in a wonderfully straightforward way. Their minds are unburdened by the layers of nuance that come with age, meaning that everything they hear or see is processed literally. In the above story, the little boy’s question—“Why do you look so fat?”—comes from a place of pure observation.
He notices a difference and simply asks about it, without any of the social filters that adults use. When the woman responds that she has a baby inside her, the boy’s logical conclusion is both charming and hilarious.
