“I think I want to study abroad,” Sam said, grinning. “Maybe take a year off and explore Europe. See some history. It sounds amazing.”
Sam’s grin faltered for just a second, his gaze dropping to the floor. When he looked back up, his voice was quieter. “You know, Dad, sometimes I wonder about where I came from. I mean, not just, you know, where I was born, but… who I am. I don’t know if I’ve ever really asked you about it, but I’ve thought about it a lot.”
David froze, the air in the room suddenly heavy. He swallowed hard, then tried to keep his voice steady. “Sam… is this something you really want to know?”
Sam nodded, his eyes serious. “Yeah, I think it is. I know you’re my dad. I know that, but… sometimes I just feel like there’s this part of me that’s missing.”
David sat back in his chair, his heart pounding. He could feel the weight of that decision pressing down on him now more than ever.
