Despite clearly indicating his gender as male on all paperwork and medical forms, nurses and staff frequently referred to him as a “mother,” highlighting a persistent institutional assumption that pregnancy is inherently tied to womanhood.

“The only thing that made me dysphoric about my pregnancy was the misgendering that happened to me when I was getting medical care for my pregnancy,” Bennett said.
