Jake knelt down and gently asked the older girl, “Where’s your mama, sweetheart?” The girl pointed toward the brown paper bag beside them. Curious and concerned, the men opened the bag and found a loaf of bread, two juice boxes, a change of clothes for each girl, and a folded note written in shaky handwriting. The note read:
Jake’s hands trembled as he handed the note over to Tom. The weight of those words was overwhelming. Tom, a man who had seen a lot in his years, said quietly, “That broke me.” For a long moment, neither of them spoke. Then the younger girl, holding tightly to Jake’s leather vest, whispered softly, “Don’t want police. Want you.”
At that moment, something inside Jake shattered. The tough, tattooed biker who had faced so much loss and loneliness finally broke down in tears. “I got you,” he told the girls gently. “You’re safe now.” Jake and Tom stayed with the sisters, comforting them and keeping them safe until help arrived.
